Dennis Tan
General Counsel / Head of Data & Corporate Governance
Singapore Trade Data Exchange (SGTraDex)

Dennis is a business- and technology-friendly counsellor. He plays a key role in driving adoption of eBLs, and actively advocates for such solutions with organisations such as the IG P&I Clubs. He also brings creative solutions to shape the governance framework for digitisation, and drives efforts to collaborate with various stakeholders. Dennis steps up beyond his legal role, performing the legal and compliance functions in a business-friendly manner and positioned legal as a collaborative stakeholder for the business. For example, Dennis streamlined the contracting process in the organization, shortening the turnaround for simple contracts to within 24 hours. Dennis also leveraged on technology for the legal and governance functions, leading to cost- and time-savings, leading to reduction on legal expenditure and shortening of corporate secretariat turnaround time from the norm of 2 weeks to under 1 week.

In the past year, Dennis successfully led a funding round for Singapore Trade Data Exchange. While dealing with 11 shareholders and 18 directors from both public and private sectors with ease, he very quickly developed non-legal skillsets, including pitching to investors and understanding a new industry.

He has also played outstanding roles in several different fields, including serving as a mentor under the NUS LAMP programme for undergraduates and a member of the Council for Estate Agencies Disciplinary Panel. When working in corporate social responsibility, Dennis led the founding of the legal clinic in Jurong Spring ward, which seeks to bring pro bono assistance to the residents.

Adhering to a growth mindset of continuously self-development, Dennis learned coding to enhance his ability as a technology lawyer, and acquiring CIPP accreditations to enhance his ability as a data and privacy lawyer. He will continue to support and promote the development and progress of the legal industry, and his specific practice will involve promoting the adoption of legal design principles and seeking new AI-driven technologies to optimize legal and compliance functions.
