Documented Talks: "Immigration Matters," Strategies for a Future Immigration System
"How do we build a more humane immigration system in the U.S.? In their new book, "Immigration Matters: Movements, Visions, and Strategies for a Progressive Future," Ruth Milkman, Deepak Bhargava, Penny Lewis convened a group of scholars and activists to try to envision this new future.
The contributors tackle different elements of the U.S. immigration system and outline elements of what a different future would look like. While there is bipartisan agreement that the current system is broken, the book lays the groundwork for a progressive path forward.
Join Documented and the NYC chapter of the Scholars Strategy Network on June 9th at 4:30 pm for a discussion on two specific elements of this book. Founder and Executive Director of African Communities Together, Amaha Kassa will discuss the future of the U.S. refugee and asylum policies that were almost completely dismantled by the Trump administration. Cardozo School of Law Professor Peter L. Markowitz will discuss the future of the Abolish ICE movement and immigration enforcement. Ruth Milkman will discuss the myths about immigrants and immigration and suggest an alternative narrative.
This event will be moderated by investigative journalist Felipe De La Hoz.
