New Poll: Iowa Republican Likely Caucus-Goers Support Immigration Reform

December 07, 2011 (1 min read)

"The Partnership for a New American Economy announces a new poll showing that the Iowa Republican likely caucus-goers, more than 80% of whom self-identify as conservative or very conservative, support legal immigration reform and rank illegal immigration as a lower priority than most other issues polled. The poll was conducted between November 16 and November 19, 2011 by Selzer & Co., using the same methodology and sample size the firm uses for the presidential poll that it conducts for the Des Moines Register.

The poll found support for the following specific proposals to expand legal immigration, with likely Iowa Republican caucus attendees saying the following proposals are “definitely good” or “worth a try”:

    • 72% are open to allowing foreign-born students educated in the U.S. to enter the workforce after graduation
    • 64% are open to streamlining the process for employers to hire the seasonal and permanent employees they need when Americans are not filling vacant jobs
    • 66% are open to increasing opportunities for high-skilled legal immigrants to enter the U.S. workforce
    • 71% are open to increasing opportunities for entrepreneurs from other countries to move to the U.S. to start a business here."
