"On Friday, January 6, 2012 President Obama and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) announced their intent to change United States immigration policy in order to help keep families together during sometimes lengthy reviews of visa applications. This announcement marked an important victory for immigrant families and the broader immigrant rights movement, and it was the result of extensive work done by immigrant rights organizations over the last year. Immigrant advocates have called this change the Family Unity Waiver. On Monday, April 2, 2012 the USCIS released the notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM), a final draft of the ‘Family Unity Waiver’ open for public comment. Immigrant organizations, individuals and people impacted by the draft rule have 60 days (until June 1) to submit their comments on the proposal. Anyone who supports the rule or would like to see it improved, should submit comments to USCIS. You can also click here to submit your comments or your own personal story of how the Family Unity Waiver could help you or your family. If you’d like to see a model comment, you can download and see them in English or in Spanish. Click here to see USCIS materials in Spanish." - FIRM, Spring 2012.
