Knowledge & Research Consultant Research Tip: Find Federal Court of Appeals Cases in a Specific State

Given that the Federal Circuits typically deal with appeals from the Federal District Courts, one can use the HISTORY segment to retrieve cases in the appropriate states.

For example, to narrow your search to cases in the 7th Circuit in Illinois only, go to Cases / United States Court of Appeals / 7th Circuit – US Court of Appeals Cases and search: HISTORY(Illinois)

To set up an alert for new 7th Circuit cases decided in Illinois, you could include a date restriction for the most recent cases in addition to the HISTORY segment search:

HISTORY(Illinois) and date > 6/2024 OR include “2024” in your search terms.

You can sort your results Newest to Oldest using the drop-down menu at the top right of your results list.

A reminder for all Alerts: do not use the Timeline filter as that has an end date (typically the end of the calendar year). Better to use the DATE segment as indicated above so that the alert continues after the end of the calendar year.
