CRIV/LexisNexis Semiannual Update

The CRIV Semiannual Call with LexisNexis® took place July 31, 2024.

This update includes news and product enhancements released between January and July 2024.

COMPANY UPDATES

LexisNexis® Legal & Professional:

  • LexisNexis acquired Henchman, a legal tech company that enriches data from Document Management Systems (DMS) for faster document drafting. Belgium-based Henchman has 170+ legal and corporate customers globally including top U.S. and European law firms and companies. The acquisition enables legal customers to extract key insights from internal data and combine trusted LexisNexis content and AI capabilities for personalized generative AI drafting experience

  • LexisNexis® Legal & Professional released the results of its 2024 Investing in Legal Innovation Survey: The Rise of GenAI at Top Firms & Corporations which surveyed 266 leaders from large law firms and Fortune 1000 corporations to better understand their adoption, use, and planned investment in generative AI technology.  The survey results point to seismic shifts in both law firm business models and corporate legal expectations due to Generative AI.

  • The LexisNexis® Future of Work Report released in March 2024 revealed a positive stance in acceptance and adoption of Generative AI among Organizations & Professionals.

  • The CounseLink 2024 Trends Report: Dynamics Shaping the Future of Legal, now in its 11th consecutive year, was published in April 2024. The report showed large law domination in share of wallet, as average law firm partner rates rose 5.4% in 2023, the highest levels since the first CounselLink Trends Report in 2013; Median partner billing rate in 750+ law firms is 61% higher than the next smaller tier.

  • LexisNexis was named the Best Overall AI Company at the prestigious 2024 AI Breakthrough Awards. This marquee honor recognizes LexisNexis' pioneering work in artificial intelligence and machine learning across its product portfolio.

Lexis+ AI™ was made commercially available to Australia, Canada, France, and the UK following successful commercial programs in each region.  Grounded in LexisNexis’ vast legal research and practical guidance content, Lexis+ AI delivers fully encrypted, secure interactions with authoritative responses in seconds with the authoritative and exclusive legal content collections of each region.

Intelligize+ AI™
Intelligize® Launched Intelligize+ AI™ in July 2024, transforming SEC Compliance Analysis with advanced AI & search capabilities.  Intelligize+ AI helps users cut through regulatory complexity, enabling them to more easily surface higher quality results than previously possible.  The reimagined platform includes generative artificial intelligence-driven capabilities and new search technologies that enable users to quickly and easily find, analyze, and compare documents using natural language processing. 

Nexis+ AI™
LexisNexis launched Nexis+ AI to corporate customers in July 2024, incorporating advanced generative AI-powered capabilities designed to transform and accelerate corporate research, intelligence gathering and business decision-making functions. Enhanced by more than 700 hours of in-depth customer interviews, Nexis+ AI is tailored to meet the evolving needs of modern businesses. Tolley+ AI™
LexisNexis announced the development of Tolley+ AI, a generative AI solution designed to transform tax research and guidance for the UK tax industry.  Grounded in the largest repository of accurate and exclusive tax content, Tolley+ AI combines the power of generative AI with proprietary search technology.  Results on Tolley+ AI will always be backed by a verifiable, citable authority or source allowing users to check the validity of results instantly and effortlessly.  Tolley+ AI is using the same underlying and proven technology that drives Lexis+ AI®, the generative AI tool for lawyers. 

UPDATED PRODUCTS & SERVICES

Lexis+ AI™ - US

  • In Q1 2024, Lexis+ AI’s core tasks were enhancement significantly:
    • Ask: Enhanced the capabilities, quality, and coverage of Lexis+ AI Ask
      • Integrated all state and federal Agency decisions, and an additional set of 170 Secondary resources within the Lexis+ AI Ask capability to expand the breadth of coverage available.
      • Improved the usefulness of responses by prioritizing higher court authority and more recent resources in the generated responses
      • Improved the comprehensiveness of responses by surfacing highly relevant Practical Guidance and Secondary materials when appropriate
      • Added capabilities for user control for filtering results by Criminal/Civil and by Published/Unpublished resources.
      • Added support for recognition of federal & state jurisdictions within prompts to narrow the response to the user’s targeted jurisdictions.

    • Upload: Updated to support additional use cases based upon customer feedback
      • Compare & Contrast documents
      • Identify Arguments within uploaded document(s)
      • Identify entities within uploaded document(s)

    • Draft: Improved the Draft task of Lexis+ AI
      • Increasing the quality of the Legal Memo, Clauses, Argument document type response output.
      • Added support for further drafting prompts (i.e. draft a letter based upon targeted facts, referencing a case).
      • Integrated further Agency content to utilize across Drafting output when appropriate.
      • Released task-specific multi-turn recommendation buttons to enable a more dynamic drafting experience

    • Summarize: Summaries generated for over 2.5M Caselaw opinions for users since the launch of Lexis+ AI
  • Launched the second-generation version of the AI Assistant on Lexis+ AI in Q2 2024 to provide a more efficient, effective, and personalized for existing subscribers. The enhancements included:

    • Faster Delivery of Results – AI-generated answers delivered faster for a more conversational experience. The AI Assistant returns trusted results backed by verifiable authority two times faster than the nearest competitor.

    • Enhanced Multi-Turn Conversation Capability – Contextual prompt conversations with the AI Assistant have been increased from a limit of five interactions to ten, helping users gain deeper insights and refine generative AI answers.

    • Conversational Guidance for Drafting – Providing tailored, task-specific recommendations that anticipate questions and guide users to leverage answers directly in drafting work including emails, letters, arguments, clauses, and memos.

    • Added Delivery Options– Expanded Lexis+ AI capabilities will provide new delivery options for conversations including Email, Download, and Print.

    • AI-Generated Statute Summaries – Lexis+ AI will provide the first legal market generative AI-powered summaries across U.S. federal and state statutes. Also available to the public via the LexisNexis U.S. Voting Laws & Legislation Center as a part of the company’s work to support transparency of law.

    • Increased Document Upload Capacity – Enabling users to analyze and summarize larger documents, now up to 400,000 characters per request (approximately 150-200 pages per document).

    • Improved User Experience – A refined user experience will deliver improved readability, ease-of-use, and aesthetic updates, including support to easily deliver and share Lexis+ AI output. Added the ability to set a default jurisdiction for future prompt efficiency.

  • Rolled out additional incremental improvements to Lexis+ AI in May, June, & July of 2024:

    • Usability enhancements include:
      • "Stop Response" Option – Gives users more control over the AI assistant’s actions, allowing them to halt responses if they need to make changes to their prompts, which will save them valuable time.

      • Default Jurisdiction – Users can now set a jurisdiction as their default jurisdiction, which allows it to appear pre-selected each time they access the jurisdiction panel for seamless workflow.

      • History – A new conversation history feature enables users to easily find, review, and re-run previous conversations with the AI assistant.

      • Lexis+ AI Uploads Grid View – Streamlines the research process by displaying answers from multiple user-uploaded documents on a single screen for clear side-by-side comparisons and efficient insights.

    • Legal research and drafting enhancements include:
      • Lexis+ AI Headnotes – Uses advanced AI technology to provide comprehensive headnote coverage for every case across the entire collection, allowing users to quickly grasp key points of law and easily locate similar cases, ensuring no critical legal insights are missed.

      • Shepardize® Uploaded Documents – Users can run the renowned Shepard's® Citation Service directly within their uploaded documents using the AI assistant. This provides access to the full Brief Analysis report, identifying weaknesses in opposing arguments and strengthening their case.

      • Shepard's Treatment Summaries – Enables users to quickly determine if a case is relevant with at-a-glance summaries and seamlessly access the full Shepard’s report.

      • Legal News Integration – Direct access to premium legal news content integrated into the AI assistant, complementing existing legal research capabilities for comprehensive legal analysis in one solution.

    • Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) enhancements now include:
      • Integration of advanced Shepard’s® Knowledge Graph to the proprietary LexisNexis RAG platform so users can harness the power of highly accurate Shepard’s® case law relationship information to deliver more authoritative, complete and final AI-generated responses.

        • Precisely identify the most relevant data from extensive Lexis legal sources.

        • Receive complete answers based on connections between related opinions, legal taxonomies, and additional metadata that enhance the quality and context of responses.

        • Accurately verify citations, case connections and legal concepts as validated by the Shepard’s® Citations Service.

        • Reduce research time and improve confidence and trust through measurably better answer quality.

    • Large Language Models added as part of our multi-model approach include:
      • Claude 3 models by Anthropic, hosted on Amazon Bedrock from Amazon Web Services (AWS)

      • GPT-4o, hosted on Microsoft Azure OpenAI

      • Fine-tuned Mistral 7B, an open-source model, hosted on LexisNexis-managed servers within AWS


Online Research Resources - Lexis+ AI & Lexis+ Updates

  • Expanded the scope of U.S. Supreme Court case coverage to include "orders without opinions"

  • Added over 2 million full-text court documents online, which extended Shepard’s citing references by over 1.2M

  • Released statute indices for Kansas, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and South Dakota. Statute researchers now benefit from a total of 52 federal, state and territory topical indices that make finding relevant statutory provisions an easy and efficient process.

  • Rolled out multiple Brief Analysis enhancements (Lexis+ AI and Lexis+)
    • Added “Winning Briefs” tags to motion histories within context of Brief Analysis
    • Added Favorable and Unfavorable authority recommendations in Brief Analysis
    • Updated the Brief Analysis home page to support upload of opponent’s document that will identify negative authority and weaknesses in an opponent’s brief
    • Released "results list integration”, a feature that allows users to view all Brief Analysis case recommendations in a search result list and easily filter to narrow results
  • Released a new AI-generated document summary to the display of the user's document in Brief Analysis (Lexis+ AI exclusive). This feature provides a quick overview of the uploaded document, saving the user time if they are not familiar with the document, such as when uploading an opponent's document or checking an associate's work.
  • Enhanced Pinpoint with the capability to ‘add facts/issues’ for filtering and expanded the jury verdicts & settlements collection accessed via users of Pinpoint for litigation research. Added support for “Standard of Care” research within Pinpoint.

  • Industry & Law Firm Filters have been added to Agreement Analysis which improves the user experience by allowing users to filter results applicable to their peers and industry, thus providing more personalized information

  • Added a new feature, Pinned Sources, that enables easy access to key sources.


Lexis+ Mobile Application

  • Added support for the annotations and highlights functions for users to mark up their documents over the course of research while using the Lexis+ mobile application.

  • Alerts on Mobile were added, enabling users to view current alerts and review results

  • Added support for Offline Document Folder document sync with Folders: documents placed in the Offline Document Folder on the web will be updated with any annotations and highlights added to the customer’s web app Folders instance.

  • Recently Viewed Icon: Users will be able to see a recently viewed icon for documents that were previously viewed, eliminating duplicated research efforts.

  • Shepard’s Agency Decision Filter: Users now see agency decision filters separate from court filters for ease of finding and applying filters.


Lexis® Create

  • Lexis Create was named best Tables of Authority Software, in the 2024 Best of National Law Journal awards. Lexis Create, the only fully integrated, end-to-end legal document drafting solution is preferred by 3 out of 4 law firms and reduces time spent on legal tasks by 50%.

  • Enhanced the AI Assistant of Lexis Create to be responsive to the user’s open document, with answers grounded in the content of the document and the LexisNexis authoritative content collection. Also updated the AI responses to make “View More Documents” accessible to continue exploring further materials from LexisNexis in support of your document draft.    

  • Enhancement to enable subscribers to Lexis Create across multiple regions to switch between US, UK and Canada to access content relevant to each country. 

  • Updated key drafting functions, including improvements to Redaction and Proofreading tools to improve overall accuracy and efficiency, and rollout of administrative capabilities to manage Snippets and customize Lexis Create based on organization's preferences.

Practical Guidance

  • Rolled out improvements to Document and Search Alerts

  • Developed deeper contextual links & integrations between Practical Guidance materials and Lexis+ Research resources

  • Expanded Shepard’s to include more content from the Practical Guidance Q&A Series, including Practical Guidance Q&A Questions and Practical Guidance Advisor Q&A

CourtLink® & Lexis® Snapshot

  • Added generative AI complaint summaries added to docket views. CourtLink docket views now include the Gen AI summaries of complaint documents, available to Lexis+ AI and Snapshot subscribers. The new summaries give users quick insight into hundreds of thousands of federal & state cases.

  • Lexis Snapshot complaint summaries were made available for Delaware state courts – the Delaware Court of Chancery and Delaware Superior courts. These summaries were also made available for the Los Angeles County Superior Court, the largest state court jurisdiction in the country. Adding to the prior Federal court coverage, Snapshot summaries for these state court issued complains will appear in alert emails and docket views, providing insight into cases of interest.

CourtLink®

  • Advanced Tracks: The new Advanced tracks feature allows users to customize their track notifications, so they are only notified when changes that are of importance to them occur. Options include selecting the specific docket sections of importance (e.g., Proceedings) and the ability to enter Keywords so the user receives a notification anytime the keywords are added to the docket.

  • Enabled a “preview mode” for underlying documents

  • Added support for multiple docket updates directly from courts

  • Enhanced searching on chapter filter for Bankruptcy Adversary Proceedings dockets

Lex Machina®

  • Rolled out product updates and expanded coverage:
    • Lex Machina released their "Litigation Footprint", a groundbreaking expansion of Legal Analytics coverage in March 2024 that offers unmatched insights into litigation track records of parties in over 27 million cases across 94 federal district courts and over 1,300 state courts. Litigation Footprint enables legal practitioners to craft successful litigation strategies, win cases, and close business by leveraging this unsurpassed expanse and depth of coverage.  In a few quick clicks, attorneys can instantly map the litigation history of parties in order to illuminate the relationships, trends, and insights that can’t be derived anywhere else, but which are crucial to winning more cases and closing more business.

    • As of May 2024, Lex Machina extended enhanced coverage of state courts to New York & Oklahoma to deliver 100 Enhanced State Courts in total, providing unparalleled insights into a total of 5.5 million state court cases. Lex Machina’s enhanced state court Legal Analytics give practitioners essential insights on judges, courts, law firms, individual attorneys, and parties in key venues across the United States.  Notable features of this enhanced coverage include filters for trial rulings, trial resolutions, and trial damages, and the ability to quickly drill down to relevant data sets using an extensive collection of filters for case types and documents. Additionally, litigators can use our recently enhanced cross-court filters to conduct state-wide searches and get new quantified, multi-court analytics on judges, courts, law firms, attorneys, and parties.

  • Lex Machina and LexisNexis published their 2024 Annual Impact of Legal Analytics Survey. Each year, Lex Machina reaches out to legal professionals, both customers and non-customers, to gain insights into how Legal Analytics continues to be used and perceived. The 2024 results indicate 80% of Legal Professionals report that clients required or expected them to use Legal Analytics, and twice as many Legal Analytics users felt prepared for generative AI compared to non-users

  • 2024 Litigation Trend Reports– released multiple trend reports on Litigation activity (also available to non-subscribers):


Verdict & Settlement Analyzer

  • Added over 103K new Jury Verdicts & Settlements to the collection

  • Released improvements for linking to expert witnesses and additional entities for deeper research

  • Refined the user experience to make filtering VSA reports easier and faster

  • Updated search approach to reduce duplicate content and enable more accurate analytics insight

  • Added support for linking directly to VSA reports via Permalinks


CaseMap® Cloud

  • Released several enhancements including Document and Transcript Annotations, Custom Fields Enhancements, Client ID tracking and Case List View enhancements.

  • Improved the ability to import PST files and create document records from email attachments.

  • Added support to export Time Maps in PDF format to provide greater flexibility when printing.

  • Upgraded to the multi-function Fact Panel providing access to all Fact actions while viewing a document or transcript, making it easier to navigate, edit, and manage your facts.

  • Reports can now be exported as Word Documents allowing users to directly convert their reports into attorney work product.

  • Added support for import/export transcript designations to and from spreadsheets.

  • Client Directory created to better manage overarching Client information and store Client ID numbers.

  • Law360 launched Bankruptcy and Law360 Healthcare Authority — two premium deep news products offering actionable intelligence for specialists in their field through in-depth insights, forward-thinking analysis, and comprehensive coverage. Law360 Healthcare and Law360 Bankruptcy Authority are essential newswires for healthcare and bankruptcy experts.
