Innovative, new online tool assists litigators with early case assessment by displaying results from similar past cases, providing interactive charts and client reports

August 18, 2010 — New York, NY – LexisNexis, a leading global provider of content-enabled workflow solutions, today announced the introduction of LexisNexis® Verdict & Settlement Analyzer, an innovative, new online tool that helps attorneys more effectively plan case strategy by providing deep insight into the outcomes of previous cases similar to their own.

“Our research indicates that early case assessment results in more favorable outcomes in 76 percent of cases, yet 64 percent of litigators readily admit they don’t have time to complete deep research before selecting an initial course of action,” said Bob Romeo, senior vice president and managing director of Research and Litigation Solutions at LexisNexis. “Verdict & Settlement Analyzer addresses this challenge and enables litigators to review the range of possible case outcomes in just seconds, delivering trusted answers drawn from the largest available online collection of verdict and settlement documents."

LexisNexis Verdict & Settlement Analyzer, accessible from both www.lexis.com and www.vsanalyzer.com, enhances early case assessment and strategy planning by helping litigators access key verdict and settlement reports from relevant past cases, quickly analyze results and data from those cases, and then generate professional reports that can be shared with clients or colleagues to illustrate decisions and help manage expectations.

How It Works
After a litigator enters basic case facts into the simple user interface, Verdict & Settlement Analyzer mines the database in seconds through lexis.com®, accessing the largest, most comprehensive collection of jury verdicts and settlements available anywhere. The tool then automatically produces a series of easy-to-interpret charts and graphs. These charts illustrate key information such as:

  • How similar cases have been resolved, and the amount awarded by method of resolution for any particular jurisdiction;
  • The range of possible outcomes, as well as emerging trends to consider; and
  • Exposures, risks and potential opportunities.

The reports can be modified by selecting different variables – such as a new timeframe, resolution options, etc. – and then re-evaluated to determine how those changes could affect the likely outcomes of the case. Once a litigator has adapted the results to his or her satisfaction, LexisNexis Verdict & Settlement Analyzer will produce a professional report that can be easily downloaded and shared with clients.

"Verdict & Settlement Analyzer helps our customers to better analyze and predict future outcomes for their cases, which is extremely valuable for planning litigation strategy,” said Romeo.

The product is the first in a series of new productivity tools from LexisNexis planned to be released this year and into 2011 that are designed to help litigators conduct early case assessment more effectively.
