Letter: DHS Violates AI Policies

Paromita Shah (she/her) at Just Futures Law writes: "Enclosed is a letter signed by over 140 tech, immigrant rights, labor, civil rights, government accountability, human rights, religious and privacy organizations to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Mayorkas calling on the agency to suspend and cancel the use or development of any artificial intelligence (AI) technologies used in immigration adjudication or immigration enforcement by December 1, 2024, in accordance with federal guidelines. (See press coverage of the letter here.) A sincere thanks to those of you who signed on. Since we circulated the sign-on letter, the White House released guidance that will expand loopholes for agencies like DHS to avoid or delay responsible AI obligations for up to a year. It is highly concerning that such exemptions/delays may leave AI oversight for immigration enforcement and adjudication in the hands of a future administration.
