Groups Release Border Management Proposal

National Immigration Forum, Apr. 24, 2024

"Today, center-right advocacy organizations hosted a press conference unveiling a border framework that prioritizes security, order and humanity at the southern border. A recording of the call is available here. “The challenges at the border continue, and Congress must act. Our proposed solutions are viable when Republicans and Democrats return to the table. A remarkable majority of Americans want these kinds of solutions,” said Jennie Murray, President and CEO of the National Immigration Forum.  “Through thoughtful, pragmatic policy solutions like those in this framework, we’re giving Congress tools to tackle policy reforms that secure our border and ensure our asylum system is efficient, effective, and fair,” emphasized Kristie De Peña, Senior Vice President of Policy at the Niskanen Center.  “This group has done the hard work of developing actual solutions for the issues we face along our borders,” said Mario H. Lopez, President of the Hispanic Leadership Fund. “These are pragmatic and effective steps for increasing border security, including ensuring we have both the proper amount of resources and that those resources are focused on the correct priorities to protect against smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal crossings.”  Amid elevated migrant encounters and security challenges at the southern border, the proposed framework offers improvements aimed at making our immigration system more secure, efficient, and humane. Among the highlights: modernized asylum processes, more personnel and technology along the border, and steps to control the flow of illicit fentanyl into the country as well as protect against human trafficking. Collaborators that contributed to this plan include the National Immigration Forum, Niskanen Center, Hispanic Leadership Fund, Mormon Women for Ethical Government,  State Business Executives, Association of Equipment Manufacturers, and Border Perspective, all of which are members of the Alliance for a New Immigration Consensus. For the full text of the border framework, please visit https://immigrationforum.org/article/border-security-management-framework/."
