CA’s Ban on ‘Captive Audience’ Meetings & Suspended Dockworkers’ Strike

CA Prohibits ‘Captive Audience’ Meetings

California Gov. Newsom (D) signed a bill (SB 399) prohibiting businesses from requiring employees to attend employer-sponsored meetings concerning religious or political matters. The measure was one of nearly a dozen introduced this year targeting such “captive audience” meetings, which are sometimes used to deliver anti-union messaging. U.S. Dockworkers Suspend Strike

The International Longshoremen’s Association suspended its strike for better wages after reaching a tentative agreement with the U.S. Maritime Alliance, which represents ports and shipping companies. The strike of 45,000 East and Gulf coast dockworkers—their first large-scale walkout in 50 years—had stopped the flow of about half of the nation’s ocean shipping. (ASSOCIATED PRESS, REUTERS)
